Day One
  • Overview of the project and the Dvorak Festival
  • Anticipatory activity, using the Soundtracks of Our Lives strategy (how music is important in our lives)--students each come up with a song that uplifts them. Think about words, music notes, tone, beat, can they dance or sing to it? Discussion in pairs of why this song is meaningful. Group share.
  • Brief discussion of the purpose of music, and the role of the spiritual in the lives of slaves in US History.
  • Listen to the song "Go Down Moses" (the version found here: 60 minutes Gospel Performance of “Go Down Moses”

  • Analyze the song "Go Down Moses" individually using graphic organizer (use the lyrics here: http://www.negrospirituals.com/news-song/go_down_moses1.htm ) Graphic Organizer:
  • Students save work to H drive.
  • Group discussion of the lyrics and other aspects of the song
  • If time allows, have students look at the musical score and discuss as a group, how looking at a score can lend insight into music as well (score found here: http://www2.cpdl.org/wiki/images/0/02/Go_down_Moses.pdf )
  • Final questions or thoughts.
  • Pass out books and note-taking organizers. Discuss reading assignment.
